Starring: Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman
by: Linsey Stanford
Hi, this is my first written movie review and with that I feel introductions are in order. I am Linsey, a 33 year old busy wife & mother of four living in sunny Southern Cali. As you are reading this, one of my three young assistants is helping pound the keyboard. I’m sure by the end of this all three will have had a hand in the review. So needless to say for me to take the time to not only watch a movie but to now write a review, let’s face it the movie was either really good or really bad…
So let’s begin. The film stars Will Smith, Charlize Theron, and Jason Bateman. It is rated PG-13 for language and violence. Modern day Los Angeles is the setting for the film. The plot is about the trials of a super hero. But Hancock (Will Smith) ain’t no Superman! He is an immortal man with super abilities on a super downward spiral. Feeling entirely out of place and mad at the world for it. He does not try to hide his rather rude outbursts or lack of compassion. Enter the dreamer Ray (Jason Bateman) (which society needs more of). His “let’s make the world a better place” attitude is exactly what Hancock needs. The relationship that forms between the two characters is very funny and honestly refreshing. This is key to the ending.
Hancock reluctantly follows Ray’s self improvement plan - And just when you think you know the general plot of the movie here enters the twist. Mary (Charlize Theron) Roy’s wife who doesn’t want anything to do with this plan or Hancock. But why do you ask? Well she and Hancock know each other but to explain how I think would depreciate our relationship. I will say this however; the movie is completely original and will pleasantly surprise you with the plot twist and ending. It will make you rethink family and working together for the benefit of all.
This movie was a hit with me for another reason -my husband, a man who enjoys life from his own house and not the movie house. He genuinely laughed out loud and once the movie was over said “I liked that”. Which in Manglish translates into “And the Oscar goes to Hancock for best motion picture!”
This film was inspiring (sometimes the belief in another person is all that is needed for change), funny, and entertaining. In my opinion that makes it a 'Gem'. It was stimulating to not be able to predict the ending and actually think about the situation. This is what humanizes the characters and may cause you to think unassumingly twice about how you were left feeling.
Hancock simply stated was a really good film.
